Allow a task to have a checklist

Allow a checklist to be created for a task. When a task is marked as complete warn the user if all check boxes aren't checked before marking complete.

I use the checklist feature in Trello for small projects. It's makes the project self contained in one "task." I find subtasks in Toodledo clunky. A checklist in task notes would solve this for me. Also, it's important to be able to change the order of the checklist.

Really need to have more editing features in Task Notes - most helpful would be creating a checklist
within
the Notes field of a TaskS

I actually see the list and outline features in toodledo as being partway towards solving this already.
You can already "attach" an outline or List from your current selection (or create one on the fly) and this then becomes your checklist.
The trouble is i have a LOT of checklists and no way of filtering them or storing them in folders.
The other trouble is that the lists/outlines features are clunky.
For example, i have a repeating task which is actually a selection of 20 steps, but i don't want to create 20 repeating tasks to "tick off", i just want a checklist in case i forget any of the steps.
So i have a repeating task which links to the checklist and i then bring up the checklist and use that to guide me through. It works! But it isn't perfect by any means.

Also, it'd be amazing to store some pre-made checklists to choose from. If I get a new real estate listing, it'd be great to just pick a list that says "New Listing" and have it pre-load a 20-point checklist that I use for each listing. I could see this being useful for a lot of industries. It's something that MeisterTask recently added and it ALMOST made me switch back, but they can't do recurring tasks, so I'm still here!

What are the differences between proposed checklists and sub tasks? I saw one person say the “heaviness” of sub tasks is one factor. What else?

boydston01: A checklist is as simple as it gets: Name, (Un)completed flag. Nothing more. So you can replace a checklist with a subtask to an extent - but it is also not included in searches, task sorting etc. without using tags and/or complex searches. Tools like Trello or Clickup usually have both for this reason. OTOH, I just cannot imagine how to fit these into Tooledo's today system.

J.O.D. 2024: so basically very lightweight and inseparably tied to its "parent" task. Makes sense.

This sounds great! I personally use the notes section for a task to create lists of (next) actions. The task (mini project) stays open and task properties (start/due date) could change due to items in the checklist. I tend to use a (Github(ish)) markdown format for creating checkboxes and add a date to indicate the date of closure. I also add progress information, so I know the exact status.
I could have a task that is called: "Create report"
The notes can have something like this:
- [x] Gather input information 20/4/2019
20/4/2019: Input was send over.
19/4/2019: Asked Person X to provide input for report.
+ [ ] Draft first version
- [ ] Ask for review
Legend.
- [x] Done {date of completion}
{date of comment} {short progress comment}
+ [ ] Next action
- [ ] Open action
A checkbox system like this would be great and really flexible.
Maybe link it to this request:

Absolutely! This would be super helpful. As it is, I created dozens of tasks to work around lack of this. :)

Yes to this. i find the whole sub-task concept in ToodleDo to be cumbersome and annoying. Trello does a similar thing that byerun is describing and I quite like it.
