Make tags permanent

Currently my tags all disappear when I complete a task. Not terribly useful. Also need them to remain and be editable similar to the folders or contexts. Not have to be created with the task then gone with the task.

Resurrecting this: With colours for tags this issue is much more prominent, as adding a new tag is not enough, I also have to go to Tags section and reset my colour again and again. I am using a dummy task with all tags - but that is still a workaround.

Sbenzing, Just create a task called "tag placeholder" for each tag you want to be permanent with "no due date" in a maintenance folder. These little tasks will be out of the way but will keep your tags alive until you want to get rid of them.

Sbenzing, did you find a work around for this? create a misc task with negative priority, tagged with tags you want to keep permanently. (Negative priority so that you can set your filters to only display non-negative priority task)

I like the idea of having both permanent and temporary (disappearing) tags. Could you add a check box on the organize tags page which we could select for tags we want to keep even when they have no associated tasks? My use case is "Amazon," which I use to flag items I might want to order. These might appear in several different contexts, so the tag is a good way to group them. Currently, the flag disappears and has to be recreated once I place my order. It would be nice to have it stick around.

Sorry to be that the center but I like it the way it is. Our use tag to indicate projects. Waite is now as I finish the project it disappears off the list. If they were permanent I would’ve a long list of tags right now that I was no longer using.

Keith Tesler: Then delete the no longer needed/used ones. :/

I seldomly use tags, but I use them - as signals for my IFTTT integration to e. g. store important notes for completed tasks into OneNote (or make a copy of website based on html in tasknote). And everytime I complete such a rare task (to invoke IFTTT), the tag gets deleted and I have yet again to remember it for future use. JeremyT idea is a good one, but still a workaround.

I'd suggest a temporary workaround of creating a dummy task with all the tags you want to keep, that way there's always a live keeping the tags from disappearing. Would work best if you have a consistent set of tags and don't have to keep going back to your dummy task to add new tags to it

JeremyT: Thanks. I like this idea.

JeremyT: there is a low limit on number of tags per task. I'd need quite a lot dummy tasks, so better to make them a permanent list.

fiona.h: I completely agree that a better solution to this issue is needed, and the solution proposed for having a "permanent" indicator is my favorite one. However, as long as we need a workaround, the proposal for a -1 task with all the 'permanent' tags is a good one. But to address your point about the limit on number of tags per task, I'd suggest that you put as many subtasks under that -1 task as you need to accommodate the large list of tags you evidently want. A potential useful side benefit is that you could group tags (if that idea was attractive) by tagging those subtasks appropriately. NOTE: I make this observation only to make a suggestion about a workaround, not a definitive solution!!

Yes, Tags should not disappear as they are needed for organisation purposes. Index of tags should show the number of tasks under each tag so that one can delete empty tags if desired.

I think preserving tags on completed tasks is a good idea for statitics, too. You could grey out tags that currently are not longer in use or move them to a separate "old tags" list or something.

nik.marc: You could, but my tag list is quite long. I am looking for some way to preserve the current functionality, but be able to see old tags that I could then click on. Perhaps a toggle showing tags no longer in use.
Alternatively, a screen to manage tags and then being able to flag ones that I want to keep active as being permanent.

I was just doing just that. I created a new task and needed a tag that was gone. Not that big a deal as the tag was 0004, but still had to re-enter it rather than click on it.
Of course, there are plenty of tags that I am happy to see go. So how do we manage these tasks? Which ones stay and which ones go? How do we removed old tags that are no longer needed?
